Can I Take My Teddy?

We are delighted to offer this new and exciting course which will explore in depth the needs of children when their parents separate. The day will focus on the outcomes and recommendations of current research in this area and offer mediators and family law practitioners a framework and guidance for supporting parents during this challenging transition.

In the Government response to the FJR 2011 specific reference was made to the need for mediators to practice in a child centred way: The Government supports the Panel’s view that “All mediation in which disputes about children are being discussed should be child centred – that is the welfare of children should be central to it”.

This course aims to increase your knowledge about child related issues following separation and to increase your confidence when supporting your clients with their parental disputes. The day will comprise presentations, small group discussions, child and parent focused exercises and role plays which are predominantly aimed at mediators although would be helpful for all practitioners working with parents post separation. You will be provided with ideas and strategies to achieve a child centred approach and have plenty of opportunity to practice, discuss and explore these concepts in a supportive and thought provoking forum.

The course is written and presented by Adrienne Cox, an experienced mediator and family law lecturer at the University of Exeter, specialising in parent and child law and a trainer for Resolution and Suzy Power who is a practitioner working closely with parents to support them in making arrangements for their children as well as being an experienced mediator, collaborative practitioner and trainer for Resolution
