Advocacy for Family Lawyers - Getting the Edge

Outline:

THIS EVENT IS NOW FULLY BOOKED - PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE TO FIND OUT IF ANY PLACES HAVE BECOME AVAILABLE BEFORE MAKING ANY PAYMENTS

30 September & 1 October.

The appetite for solicitors and legal executives to undertake their own advocacy continues to grow.

This two day course provides an invaluable opportunity for all family lawyers to explore, learn, refresh, and re-examine their advocacy skills.

The skills developed will be applicable to both children and financial remedy cases alike and are transferrable to both publicly funded and privately funded work.

The course examines the theory and practice of court representation, and then moves to filmed role-play, with feedback and analysis from experienced family barrister, (and former solicitor) Nicola Wallace of 4 Paper Buildings.

Spaces are intentionally limited to small groups to ensure each delegate has time to learn, practice their technique and to receive individual feedback on advocacy presentation skills.

Day One (9.30am-5.30pm)

1. What is advocacy?

2. The Art of Persuasion

3. A strategy for case preparation applicable to all types of cases

4. Skeleton arguments

5. A reminder of the basics: Court rules and etiquette

6. First Appointment (Financial Remedy) advocacy exercises

7. Trial preparation in detail

Day Two (9.30am-5.30pm)

Advocacy exercises:

i) FDR - Financial Remedy

ii) Private Children Trial: contact dispute
