John Cornwell Award 2015

Family law organisation Resolution last night recognised two of the brightest stars in family justice at the prestigious John Cornwell Award, presented at Resolution’s Annual Conference in Brighton.

This year, the decision was made to present the award to two Resolution members for the first time ever. Felicity Shedden and Roger Bamber were the joint winners of the 2015 John Cornwell Awards, as the judging panel wanted to recognise each of their outstanding, and different, contributions to family law.

The Award was created two years ago as part of Resolution’s 30th Anniversary year, and named after John Cornwell, who founded Resolution out of a desire to create a better way for separating couples to resolve their disputes. This led to the creation of Resolution’s Code of Practice, which encourages a non-confrontational approach to separation and divorce.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Resolution chair Jo Edwards said: “It would be a cliché to say, “there can be only one winner.” It would also be inaccurate. Because, when we discussed the nominees, we very quickly realised that it wouldn’t be possible to give just one award.”

“So, this year, we have made it a joint award, to recognise Felicity Shedden and Roger Bamber. Both Felicity and Roger represent, in their own ways, the very best of Resolution. Their energy and enthusiasm in bringing our Code of Practice to life is unfailing. They both go above and beyond, everyday, in order to and are valued by their clients, colleagues and peers in equal measure.”

Felicity Shedden, who set up Shedden Family Law in 2012, has been instrumental in pioneering mediation-arbitration (med-arb) in England and Wales. In addition to her dispute resolution practice, Felicity is a Deputy District Judge. She has a particular interest in the relationship between legal and therapeutic work with couples, bringing great depth and insight to her work.

Roger Bamber, a partner at Mills & Reeve, has a lifetime of family law practice behind him. Roger champions the collaborative approach, and was one of the first mediator lawyers trained in the UK. Roger is a passionate advocate of people being in control of their own lives – making the best decisions for their family and being empowered by having the best guidance. His contribution as a pioneer in reducing divorce conflict is matched by few practising in family law.

Jo Edwards says: “Resolution’s founder John Cornwell would undoubtedly be amongst the loudest applauders for these two worthy winners. It’s the tireless work done by practitioners such as Felicity and Roger that makes the Resolution ethos and Code of Practice a vital force in family law.”
