John Cornwell

Resolution is saddened to hear the news that John Cornwell, founder of our organisation passed away last Friday.

John dedicated much of his working life to the development and progress of family law setting up Resolution in 1982. One of his first steps was to draft a Code of Practice that all members follow to this day. The vision and imagination that John showed in gathering family lawyers together and proposing a different way of working should not be underestimated. The positive impact of this for families over the last 30 years is immeasuarable.

He was instrumental in the development of mediation in England and Wales having co-founded the Family Mediators Association in 1998. John was also a Deputy District Judge of the Principal Registry of the Family Division of the High Court from 1986, and a member of the Law Society Family Law Committee from 1993 to 1999.

John co-founded Dawson Cornwell and Co in 1972 and forty years on it is still an established law firm specialising in all aspects of matrimonial and children law.

Both Resolution, and separating families owe a huge debt to John for his vision, passion and determination. 2013 is Resolution's 30th anniversary year. Our celebrations are rooted in John's vision and acheivements and will mark John's enormous contribution to family law in England and Wales.

Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues at this sad time.
