Ask your MP to sign EDM 582

As a result of contact with one of our members, Caroline Lucas, MP for Brighton Pavilion, has tabled an Early Day Motion, calling for greater legal protection for cohabitants, and making reference to our Cohabitation Awareness Week.

Early Day Motions (EDMs) are a great way for MPs to draw attention to a particular cause.

Please encourage your MP to sign the EDM - we have enclosed a suggested email for you to send below.

You may also want to tweet them (you can find out if they have a Twitter handle here), with text along the lines of:

@[MPNAME] - Please support EDM 582 – cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type, yet have little legal protection if they separate. http://www.parliament.uk/edm/2017-19/582

Thanks in advance for doing this - it will be great to get as many MPs signing the EDM as possible to demonstrate the widespread support for our calls for change.

Dear [MP's nameyou can find your local MP here]

I am a [family lawyer/mediator/other] that lives in your constituency.

I am emailing to request that you sign EDM 582 – Legal rights for cohabitees who separate.

As you may know, cohabiting couples are the fastest growing family type in the UK, with more than 6 million people living in these sort of relationships. However, should these couples separate, they currently have little or no legal protection - despite the myth of ‘common law marriage.’

I regularly deal with the impact of this lack of rights, and it’s very likely you will have had people come to your surgeries to seek your help. This is why I would be delighted if you would sign this EDM and demonstrate that you agree that cohabitees should be given some basic rights should they separate, for whatever reason.

Please let me know if you are willing to sign this EDM.

I look forward to hearing from you.
